About the Manifesto

In February 2001, seventeen software practitioners met at Snowbird, Utah, and wrote a single page that changed how the world builds software: the Manifesto for Agile Software Development. Four values. Twelve principles. One honest sentence: while there is value in the items on the right, we value the items on the left more.

The Agile Education Manifesto was born at The Agile Coaches Retreat 2017 in Goa, India, where Satyavrat Nirala spearheaded and designed it. Preety Chetry was part of it there as primary flag bearer, and Naveen Babu Garikapati, primary flag bearer, later helped improve its values and principles.

The manifesto carries that same spirit into the place where every mindset begins: learning. It keeps the form of the original with gratitude: a preamble, four values set against what they replace, and principles that turn those values into practice for students, teachers, professors, parents and everyone who learns.

In 2018 the manifesto was first put to work with a full cohort of learners. The photographs are the earliest evidence that its values hold up in a real classroom. Since then the same conviction has grown into research, into HiMirrorly, and into Svadhyaya for the youngest learners.

This site is deliberately simple, in homage to the original page. It is meant to be read top to bottom, copied freely in its entirety, and shared.

Satyavrat Nirala, chief author

A father first. For about eighteen years Satyavrat has worked in technology, most of it as an agile transformation coach, helping teams and large organisations build things people genuinely need. He has coached and trained thousands of learners, inside and outside IT, and describes himself as an accidental inventor, entrepreneur, social scientist, coach and lifelong learner.

His work rests on one idea: technology should amplify human potential and wellbeing, and people, not machines, should make the final judgement. That idea runs through the manifesto, the HCI framework and the CIS area of study, HiMirrorly, and Svadhyaya.
